Meet My New Friend, His Name is TED

I love talking. Granted, I have always been a shy and quiet person in new situations; but once I am comfortable I could talk for hours. I even considered naming this blog "Tara Is Talking." Talking with friends makes everyone feel more comfortable. I want to tell you about my newest friend, TED; but first let me tell you how we met. When I first stopped teaching to be a stay at home mom, I became a little depressed. While I loved being at home with my baby, I missed being around friends. I missed standing in the hallway and talking about lesson plans, group planning meetings where we bounced ideas off of each other, even sitting in staff meetings! Yes, staff meetings...I was desperate.  Eventually I found my way into mom groups and made friends who I could have intelligent conversations with.  But as we all know, life gets busy.  On days when I don't have a play date or a gal pal I can call, I end up hanging out with my other good friend, Target, just to get out of the house. Many of you know Target, so you know she isn't a very good influence. We waste a lot of time when we're together, and she usually takes all of my money.  That said, I try not to hang out with Target often. I found myself craving adult conversation beyond what I could get on social media. While texting and Facebook messaging are a good way to connect, how often have you had a brain stimulating conversation that way? I can't think of one time. When I first heard of TED talks, I will admit I thought...Who is this Ted guy and why does everyone love to listen to him talk? Instead of giving them a chance, I blew it off and went on with my routines. One day, many months later, a wise woman told me that I would really enjoy them. I took my aunt's advice because she and I are very much alike so I knew I could trust her opinion. I downloaded the app, and after my first TED Talk, I was hooked.  TED is dedicated to spreading ideas through talks by a wide range of speakers. TED started out as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design came together, thus giving birth to the acronym. Today it covers almost any topic you can imagine in talks ranging from 2 minutes on up.  What I love the most about TED is that it expands the mind. I've listened to talks that empowered me, made me cry, challenged my way of thinking, and introduced me to topics I never knew existed.

I have never listened to one of his talks before, but I always hear such great things about them. I need to make it a point to sit down and listen to one.

I do feel like I learn a lot from the talks. Some more than others obviously, but it is something different than the radio or television

This is my first time hearing about TED and I am already impressed with what he can do. I think it’s awesome that there’s a program like this that also provides a range of topics for you to listen to.

I love TED talks too! I have the app on my phone and I love to turn it on when I’m driving. So much inspiration on there, so many great stories. And I love that you can find a TED talk on any topic you can imagine.

Me too! It is great that you don’t necessarily have to watch them. I even put them on when I’m cleaning at home sometimes

I subscribe to the daily TED emails as well as the TED Radio Hour Podcast. The podcast is probably my favorite because it covers multiple talks around one subject.

I love this post and can relate to it on every level. I have only listened to a few TED talks but I think I’m going to search for some more. It’s a nice break from reading and Target.

After moving to a new city 1000+ miles from home, I found myself having to introduce myself to people I never met. I love the idea of getting out just to get stimulation. This helps with conversation and most people are truly friendly! I’m sure I’ll be rereading this in a few year when I have kids!

Oh wow, that is far from home. It can be hard to meet new people and step out of our comfort zones, but it is a great way to grow

I have heard a lot about TED, but I have been reluctant about listening to him talk for the same reasons. But maybe I’ll give them a listen sometime! 🙂
