Safe Exercise Tips for Summer Heat

Something about summertime makes you wanna get up and get out and get active. The thing is, you may notice some common issues caused by the summer heat and humidity making your daily workout harder. Taking precautions to prevent excess fatigue, dehydration, and heat injury will keep you up and going for a safe and happy while you exercise this summer.

Rehydrate after working out.

Summer heat forces your body to sweat more. If you do not make an effort to replace lost fluids you will have to deal with the effects and risks of dehydration. Many people do not enjoy drinking water, but you can easily rehydrate with a sports drink, fruit infused water, or your favorite water enhancer. Fresh fruits and veggies make a great post workout snack that helps rehydrate as well. Watermelon is a great filling low calorie and high water content snack.

Check the heat index.

Avoid working out during peak heat that can leave you feeling run down faster than normal. High heat indexes put you at higher risk of heatstroke, and dehydration. Even when you are not being hit by a heat wave, you will notice that peak hours between 11 and 2 are not the best time for safe summer exercise outdoors. If you need to sneak a workout in during this time, look for an indoor or water activity. Early morning and late evening are ideal.

Dress for safe summer exercise.

Lightweight clothing that wicks moisture away from your body to keep you cool is vital to keeping healthy while working out in the heat. Look for clothing options that breathe, but offer UV protection. Stick to light colors that will not absorb the sun's heat.

Pile on the sunscreen.

An outdoor game of basketball or a day of swimming laps in the pool are great summer exercise but there is nothing good about the pain that comes from a sunburn. Sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin from sun damage. Be sure to reapply regularly while you are working out. For best results apply at least 30 minutes before you head outside to allow it to soak into your skin. When you come in, rehydrate your skin with a hydrating lotion.

Water Fun

Look for a chance to take advantage of the summer heat and find your way into the water for a fun and cool workout. Water keeps you from overheating and helps keep your body healthy while keeping the impact low on your bones and joints. Swimming laps and playing water sports make great workouts. Be sure to use a waterproof sunscreen to protect your skin from sun magnified by the water.

The most important part about safe summer exercise is to plan your workouts to fit your needs. Working out too hard or while wearing sweat suits in the summer is a great way to lose weight, but the cost of losing a few pounds of water weight can be more than you want to pay (particularly on hot days). Make wise choices and find a summer workout you enjoy doing without sacrificing your health.
